As a result of joint venture between government of Himachal Pradesh and government of India Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited also known as SJVN was incorporated on 24th may, 1988.
It is involved in planning, investigating, organizing, executing, operating and maintaining Hydro-electric power projects in India. It has been rewarded by a title of Miniratna Company by government of India. Currently the total authorised capital share of SJVN is Rs. 7000 Crores. The very first project undertaken for execution by SJVN was Nathpa Jhakri Hydro – Electric Power Station– NJHPS. Besides working for social and economic development of people this organisation is also responsible for 6612 MU of electricity in a year and is also a major contributor of power in Northern Grid.
Apart from setting up many important projects in India SJVN has moved a mile further and bagged 900 MW Arun III hydroelectric projects in Nepal through its competitiveness. As the demand for energy consumption is increasing due to frequent economic and industrial development India has become fifth largest consumer of energy in world. In order to meet the energy needs of people and depletion of crude oil, natural gas and coal there raises the need for such energy producer which is imperishable. Therefore SJVN has also moved into the field of manufacturing wind energy.
